SUMMARY:Sparrow
DESCRIPTION:The final program\, Sparrow ignites the stage with three one-act ballets by choreographers spanning from yesterday’s eminence to today’s prominence: George Balanchine\, Houston Ballet artistic Director Emeritus Ben Stevenson O.B.E\, and our very own Stanton Welch AM. \nBalanchine’s Theme and Variations\, set to Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3 in G major\, is an intensive development of the classic ballet lexicon. Theme and Variations were intended\, as Balanchine wrote: “to evoke that great period in classical dancing when Russian ballet flourished with the aid of Tchaikovsky’s music.” \nStevenson’s Four Last Songs\, set to Richard Strauss’s operatic score\, presents four distinct movements\, each reflecting the ebb and flow of the human experience. Hailed by SFGATE as ‘ineffably moving\,’ the ballet converges verbal\, musical\, and choreographic imagery at its culmination. \nWelch’s uplifting\, toe-tapping Sparrow\, set to some of Simon & Garfunkel’s most recognizable music\, fills the stage with a vibrant and large ensemble cast. Embodying movements that bring to life the mini stories within songs such as Cecilia and Scarborough Fair\, this audience favorite is a nod to the late ’60s culture\, blending drama\, energy and an All-American sound that transcends generations.

SUMMARY:Woolf Works
DESCRIPTION:Wayne McGregor’s award-winning ballet triptych Woolf Works re-creates the emotions\, themes\, and fluid style of three of Virginia Woolf’s novels: Mrs. Dalloway\, Orlando\, and The Waves. With inspiration also enmeshed with elements from her letters\, essays\, and diaries\, Woolf Works expresses the heart of an artistic life driven to discover a freer\, uniquely modern realism. It brings to life Woolf’s world of “granite and rainbow”\, where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence. Created for The Royal Ballet in 2015\, Woolf Works is an ambitious\, brave\, and thoughtful ballet set to challenge our expectations and take us to exhilarating new places. \nWoolf Works has received notable recognition and outstanding critical acclaim. The full-length contemporary ballet won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production\, and McGregor was awarded the Critics Circle National Dance Award for Best Classical Choreography for the work. \nAdvisory:\nThis production contains references to suicide. Lasers will be projected into the auditorium.

SUMMARY:Paul Taylor at The Joyce
DESCRIPTION:“One of the most exciting\, innovative\, and delightful dance companies in the entire world.” (The New York Times) Paul Taylor Dance Companyreturns to The Joyce to take audiences deeper into Paul Taylor’s choreographic genius. \nFrom Artistic Director Michael Novak come two unique programs featuring three reconstructions of Taylor dances not seen since the early 1970s: the avant-garde Tablet from 1960\, featuring designs by Ellsworth Kelly; the hilarious\, yet multi-layered\, Noah’s Minstrels from 1973; and the disturbing Churchyard from 1969. Anchoring each program are celebrated Taylor masterworks: Esplanade\, in honor of its 50th Anniversary\, and Cloven Kingdom – two dances that established Taylor as one of the most transformative dancemakers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

SUMMARY:Miami City Ballet on Tour: Swan Lake
DESCRIPTION:As timeless as love itself\, Swan Lake has been enchanting audiences the world over for more than a century—ever since Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov restaged the work for the Imperial Mariinsky Theater in 1895. \nNow\, the world’s most mesmerizing ballet is being performed by Miami City Ballet in a captivating version by one of the most brilliant choreographers of our time\, Alexei Ratmansky. More than 50 dancers adorn the stage in lush and glittering costumes to tell the story of Prince Siegfried\, Princess Odette and her fellow spellbound swans\, the evil Baron and impostor Odile. \nTchaikovsky’s moving and joyful music is played live by Pacific Symphony as some of ballet’s most famous moments unfold. From a grand and gorgeous medieval court to the lakeside under a midnight moon\, the romance of this achingly beautiful Swan Lake will set your heart alight.

SUMMARY:Giselle
DESCRIPTION:A timeless favorite\, Giselle masterfully conveys the heartbreaking story of unrequited love\, devasting loss\, and triumphant forgiveness. A heart-wrenching saga of love and mercy\, Giselle tells the story of the titular village maiden in love with a handsome villager named Albrecht. What Giselle does not know is that her new paramour is a young nobleman in disguise and is already betrothed to another. When the truth is revealed\, she dies of a broken heart\, but ultimately returns from the grave to forgive her lover and save him from a vengeful death by the forest-dwelling Wilis.
