SUMMARY:Love's Gentle Spring: Two New Dances by Stephen Mills
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of POE / A Tale of Madness\, Stephen Mills presents two World Premieres! We celebrate the arrival of the season of wildflowers and renewal as Stephen Mills shares a pair of new works. \nThe first work is set to Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s “String Quartet No. 12 in F Major\, Op. 96.” Nicknamed the American Quartet\, Dvořák wrote this piece while enjoying a summer vacation in Spillville\, Iowa. Completed in only thirteen days\, this was Dvořák’s second attempt at writing a quartet in F major. Featuring live accompaniment by the Austin Symphony Orchestra\, the moving melodies of Dvořák’s composition evoke the exuberant feelings of springtime. \nThe second piece on the program features the music of contemporary composer and Grammy award-winning artist Bryce Dessner: guitarist\, keyboardist\, and songwriter for his band\, The National. Called “a vital and rare force in new music\,” Dessner’s compositions have been performed by Orchestre de Paris\, BBC Symphony Orchestra\, the San Francisco Symphony\, and many more. He has worked with a variety of artists\, including Philip Glass\, Paul Simon\, Bon Iver\, and Taylor Swift on her song “Coney Island.” Dessner’s “Concerto for Two Pianos\,” written for and first performed by Katia and Marielle Labèque\, premiered in 2018 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Dessner regularly tours with his band\, including a recent performance at Austin’s Moody Center in November of 2023. \nLove’s Gentle Spring unites the beauty of spring\, music\, and movement harmoniously in concert.

SUMMARY:Coppélia
DESCRIPTION:The whole family will delight in the misadventures of the spirited Swanilda\, her foolish sweetheart Frantz\, and mad inventor Dr. Coppélius in New York City Ballet’s Coppélia. With lively characters\, a case of mistaken identity\, and a bright orchestral score\, the New York Times calls it a “story ballet done to perfection.” \nOne of the world’s foremost dance companies is back with this charming\, comedic masterpiece about an eccentric toymaker and the doll he creates. After noticing Frantz’s infatuation with Dr. Coppélius’ masterwork—a beautiful life-like doll named Coppélia—a jealous Swanilda sneaks into the inventor’s workshop to uncover its secrets. The ensuing mayhem culminates in a magnificent grand finale\, as the village celebrates the Festival of Bells. Originally choreographed in the 19th century\, this production was restaged by George Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova for its New York City Ballet premiere in 1974.

SUMMARY:Alvin Ailey in Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:Strength\, precision\, and passion remain the hallmarks of the august Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater more than 65 years after its inception. The company’s legendary dancers return to Berkeley with vibrant programs of new and classic works that showcase and synthesize a dazzling range of cultural influences\, from spirituals and church hymns\, jazz\, R&B\, and hip-hop\, to African dance and classical ballet. Many of the earliest Ailey works and the newest company creations share a common focus: illuminating the rich panorama of Black American experience. Ailey’s monumental Revelations serves as a beacon through it all\, and as former company dancer and keeper of the Ailey flame Sylvia Waters observes\, “It’s a testament to Alvin’s understanding of humanity and the human spirit. That\, yes\, people experience despair\, struggle\, repression\, oppression\, but they have the resilience and strength to go forward.” \nThis year’s programs feature the Bay Area premieres of four works—Jamar Roberts’ Al-Andalus Blues\, Matthew Rushing’s Sacred Songs\, Hope Boykin’s Finding Free\, and Lar Lubovitch’s Many Angels—that recently received their world premieres at New York’s City Center\, as well as new productions of Ronald K. Brown’s Grace (1999) and Elisa Monte’s Treading (1979). \nThe company’s current season celebrates the life and legacy of Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison\, who passed away on November 9\, 2024\, and Cal Performances dedicates the April 2025 Ailey Week and AileyCamp to her legacy as well.
