SUMMARY:Innovators & Icons I
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by a Company engagement at the Edinburgh Festival and set to an evocative Mendelssohn score\, Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony\, for a lead couple and a corps de ballet\, is a nod to the romantic tradition of ballet. Jerome Robbins’ enthralling Glass Pieces\, a perennial favorite in the repertory\, moves through moods to rise to a galvanizingly energetic finale. And while Justin Peck is celebrated for his high-energy ensemble works\, Belles-Lettres reveals another aspect of his voice\, with its series of gently lyrical pas de deux and solos steeped in an air of reflective romanticism.

SUMMARY:All Balanchine I (Spring)
DESCRIPTION:A feast for Balanchine devotees. The oldest Balanchine ballet in the repertory\, the neoclassical masterwork Apollo\, first staged in 1928\, leads a bill that traces the choreographer’s work across an astonishing half-century. Also on the program is the exhilarating Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux\, a supremely stylish dance created to music originally written for Swan Lake. And representing the latter years of Balanchine’s career are two dances created in the 1970s: the vivacious Ballo della Regina\, with its quicksilver choreography and sprightly music by Giuseppe Verdi\, and the entrancing Chaconne\, which includes a memorably beautiful pas de deux and a thrilling ensemble finale\, set to music drawn from Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Euridice.

SUMMARY:Encore Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:Based on Mary Shelley’s 19th-century novel-turned-pop culture classic\, the captivating must-see production from Liam Scarlett returns to our stage. Frankenstein features sensational choreography\, cinematic design\, costumes\, special effects\, pyrotechnics\, and a haunting original score from Lowell Liebermann. Scarlett’s production of the pioneering science fiction novel is a visceral and profoundly emotional tale of life\, death\, love\, and identity. \nDue to mature themes\, this ballet is recommended for ages 14 and up.

SUMMARY:Innovators & Icons II
DESCRIPTION:A pair of Jerome Robbins ballets set to the music of Bach are featured alongside works by Alexei Ratmansky and Christopher Wheeldon. Robbins’ A Suite of Dances features a single male dancer—Mikhail Baryshnikov originated the role—interacting with the onstage cellist\, creating a mood of friendly companionship. Brandenburg\, Robbins’ final ballet\, danced to four of the famed concertos of the title\, is a series of pas de deux that evoke strikingly contrasting moods. Wheeldon’s After the Rain Pas de Deux has become one of his signature works\, a transfixing dance that contains hints of spirituality and transcendence despite its seeming simplicity. And the program kicks off with the latest work from Alexei Ratmansky.

SUMMARY:Director’s Vision: No Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:A triple bill of emotion concludes the 2024–2025 Season at the Aronoff Center\, featuring works from choreographers Alexander Ekman\, and David Morse\, and a regional premiere from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. \nEkman’s Cacti is a playful and witty parody of contemporary dance. The work is an affectionate\, pointed\, and often hilarious deconstruction of the affectations of dance. \nBoth intimate and cinematic\, Morse’s Our Story looks at the unique singularity of history’s darkest chapter—the Holocaust—and asks profound questions about what is required of each of us to appreciate our shared humanity. \nThe program is capped with Delmira\, a regional premiere from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. The dramatic work was inspired by the life of 20th-century Latin American poet Delmira Agustini\, one of the first female poets of the modern era. Ochoa tells her story using the symbolism that Agustini employed in her writing.

SUMMARY:Dance Series 2
DESCRIPTION:New premieres and old favorites define Dance Series 2. Artistic Director Amy Seiwert creates a World Premiere\, her 13th ballet for the Company. Trey McIntyre returns to Smuin with the Bay Area premiere of his Wild Sweet Love\, an ode to the ups and downs of love set to a range of music from Mendelssohn to Queen. McIntyre’s “fertility of invention and modernity of spirit” (The New York Times) is no stranger to Smuin\, and we’re delighted to add another of his ballets to our repertory. Completing the program is a pair of favorites: Michael Smuin’s Rodin-inspired The Eternal Idol\, originally choreographed for American Ballet Theatre superstars Cynthia Gregory and Ivan Nagy\, and Smuin Alum Rex Wheeler’s spritely\, springy Sinfonietta. \nYou can also catch Dance Series 2 in Walnut Creek (May 23 & 24)\, Mountain View (May 29–June 1)\, and Carmel (June 7 & 8).

SUMMARY:The Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:The classic fairytale is made even more enchanting by Tchaikovsky’s lush score and Christopher Stowell’s reimagined choreography (after Marius Petipa who debuted the ballet in St. Petersburg\, Russia in 1890). The story is familiar—Princess Aurora is cursed by the wicked Carabosse\, who deems that she should prick her finger on a spindle on her 16th birthday and die. The dreamy Lilac Fairy intercedes to alter the curse to instead induce a 100-year slumber\, only to be awoken only by true love’s kiss. The ballet version of this enduring tale shines with opulent costumes\, breathtaking romance\, and timeless good-versus-evil storytelling\, all while presenting some of the most challenging choreography in ballet’s rich history. We invite you to experience the splendor\, the suspense\, and the spellbinding magic that is The Sleeping Beauty. \nPreview the Magazine >>
