SUMMARY:All Balanchine II
DESCRIPTION:The Company honors the centenary of Maria Tallchief’s birth with three Balanchine works created on the great ballerina. Tallchief danced in the 1952 premiere of Scotch Symphony\, a romantic ballet in which Balanchine paid homage to the dramatic landscape and atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands. A pas de deux inspired by the full-length Sylvia returns to the repertory after 30 years\, and features intricate classical steps that highlighted her spectacular technique. And Tallchief was also renowned for her performance in the title role of Firebird\, an allegorical fantasy set to Stravinsky’s brilliant score.

SUMMARY:Anthology
DESCRIPTION:Often an audience favorite\, Anthology offers rich variety in a collection of short works. This season\, the common thread in this program is one of distinctly American influences. In different ways\, each of these works exemplify the many facets of American dance as we know it today. \nWe are excited to revive Six Figures\, created by company soloist Ashley Baker during our digital season in 2021. Ashley created this work for the screen and is excited to reimagine it for a live audience. \nCreated for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company\, Something About Night offers poignant scenes of dancers sharing moments of refuge in an increasingly loud world. We are thrilled to have this work return to our stage this season. \nCherice Barton is a new voice in Ballet Idaho’s repertoire\, but she is anything but new to the world of choreography. Barton’s experience ranges from concert dance to film\, Broadway\, and television. Based in Los Angeles\, she has worked with famous figures like Katy Perry and George Lucas\, and we are thrilled to see what Cherice creates in Boise with our talented artists. \nAlso back by popular demand\, we will close our program with the incredible Extremely Close\, choreographed by Alejandro Cerrudo featuring music by the iconic American composer\, Phillip Glass. One of Cerrudo’s most performed works\, this work has proven to be an enduring classic of the contemporary dance cannon\, leaving the audience captivated with its hypnotic drama. \nPreview the Magazine >>

SUMMARY:Twyla Tharp Dance Diamond Jubilee
DESCRIPTION:A titan of American dance\, Twyla Tharp celebrates 60 years crafting strikingly original\, thoroughly accessible\, and utterly uncategorizable works with the West Coast premiere of SLACKTIDE\, a new collaboration with composer Philip Glass\, the artists’ first partnership in nearly 40 years. Performed live by Chicago’s Grammy-winning Third Coast Percussion ensemble\, the score is based on Glass’ 1993–99 work Aguas da Amazonia and reflects on the crisis of climate change. Tharp also revives Diabelli\, her 1998 triumph that challenges 11 dancers and a pianist to embody Beethoven’s endlessly inventive Diabelli Variations (performed live by pianist Vladimir Rumyantsev). \n“Tharp is America’s crossover dance queen… She melds classical ballet with modern dance\, avant-garde experiment with Broadway pizzazz\, technical rigor with off-the-cuff attitude\, uptown glamor with downtown grit.” —The Guardian

SUMMARY:Innovators & Icons
DESCRIPTION:Jerome Robbins’ intimate knowledge of Chopin’s piano works illuminates the delicate beauty of In the Night\, set to the composer’s nocturnes and featuring the romantic interplay among three couples set against a backdrop evoking a starry night sky. Balanchine’s ever-popular leotard ballet Symphony in Three Movements ranks among the most exhilarating dances he created to the music of Stravinsky\, with its driving energy matching the fierce pulse of the score. Rounding out the evening is a world premiere from Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky\, his eighth dance commissioned by the Company.

SUMMARY:Balanchine + Wheeldon
DESCRIPTION:Two plotless Balanchine classics and a narrative ballet from Christopher Wheeldon comprise this program. Divertimento No. 15 is a bravura series of variations marked by complex and captivating classical steps\, while the ebullient Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux is a thrilling dance that showcases Balanchine’s ability to evoke a world of romance with just two dancers and less than ten minutes of music. For Carnival of the Animals\, Wheeldon\, employing a scenario written by the actor John Lithgow\, was inspired by New York’s Museum of Natural History to create a delightful fantasy in which a young boy dreams that his family and friends have all been transformed into fauna.

SUMMARY:Heart's Desire: Three Exceptional Dances
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Valentine’s Day with excitement\, elegance\, and a trio of exceptional dances! \nPolyphonia\, considered Christopher Wheeldon’s breakthrough contemporary ballet\, pairs four couples to the spiky and complex music of Hungarian composer György Ligeti. The work is described by dancers as “the curtain goes up and it’s like being shot out of a cannon.” Incorporating this music made famous by Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 thriller Eyes Wide Shut\, Wheeldon’s Polyphonia made its premiere in 2001 with the New York City Ballet. \nStephen Mills’ Desire finds passion and raw human emotion taking the spotlight. Featuring the exquisite music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt\, this breathtaking pas de deux is inspired by the challenging emotions of letting go. Performed in Paris\, New York City\, Washington D.C.\, and Puerto Rico\, Desire returns home to Austin. Dance Magazine proclaimed the “… energy was high\, the gestures crisp\, and the partnering bold…a strong sense of aesthetic purpose…” \nThe music of legendary crooner Tony Bennett provides the perfect soundtrack to Jessica Lang’s ZigZag. Recently created for American Ballet Theatre\, Ballet Austin is the first company to acquire the work since its premiere two years ago. Lang worked with Tony Bennett to incorporate both his songs and visual artwork into her fun-filled dance work featuring 14 dancers. With a festive array of brilliant colors\, a burst of polka-dots\, and (of course) zig zags\, this upbeat piece brings together seven decades of Tony Bennett’s time-honored vocal favorites in a recording that also features a special duet by Lady Gaga. With costumes by Wes Gordon\, creative director of the Carolina Herrera fashion house\, this work brings together the worlds of theater\, dance\, and fashion. \nPreview the Magazine >>
