Ballet Idaho has announced the appointment of Madeline Turnock as its new executive director. Turnock, a seasoned leader with a rich background in nonprofit and corporate sectors, officially assumed her role on January 21, 2025. She steps into the position following Artistic Director Garrett Anderson’s admirable tenure as interim executive director over the past 18 months.

“We are overjoyed to welcome our new executive director mid-season and forever grateful to Garrett Anderson for stepping in as our interim leader,” said Board President Mary Beth Chandler. “The Board of Directors is committed to working with Madeline as she integrates into our community, our dance family, and our expression of the arts. We invite all Idahoans to celebrate the movement of dance as we finish our season and plan for the next one.”

Turnock’s arrival marks a new chapter for Ballet Idaho as the organization continues its mission to engage with Idaho communities and beyond, creating immersive dance performances and accessible educational experiences. A former pre-professional ballet student herself, Turnock’s personal connection to the art form complements her extensive professional experience and will enrich her contributions in this role.

“Ballet has the power to transform lives and communities, and I’m so honored to join Ballet Idaho to continue delivering the region’s highest quality dance performances and instruction,” said Turnock. “The artistry of Ballet Idaho’s dancers and Garrett Anderson’s artistic direction are a national treasure based right here in the Treasure Valley.”

Her early ballet training included studying with Barbara Remington, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Summer Dance Lab, and the Joffrey Ballet’s summer program on full scholarship. Turnock’s impressive professional career spans roles in corporate communications at Umpqua Bank, the president’s office at Oregon’s largest nonprofit university, and as vice president at H&K Strategies. Her educational background includes a master’s degree in organizational leadership and a bachelor’s degree in public relations and English literature from Gonzaga University.

Garrett Anderson, who is in his seventh season as Artistic Director, expressed his enthusiasm for Turnock’s appointment. “Madeline’s wealth of leadership experience, affinity for the art form, and valuable cross-industry perspective will serve her well in this role. I look forward to collaborating with her as we lead this organization along with Associate Artistic Director Anne Mueller. This organization has seen important growth over the last several years, and Madeline is the right person to help steward Ballet Idaho into its next chapter.”

After a national search, The Ballet Idaho Board of Trustees is confident in Turnock’s ability to guide the organization into its next phase of growth and innovation. With her leadership, the company is poised to continue enriching lives through dance, strengthening its role as a cultural cornerstone in Idaho and beyond.
