Magical holiday destinations a short drive away from St. Louis.

As the chill of winter settles over the Midwest and twinkling lights appear on every corner, there’s no better time to embark on a road trip brimming with nostalgia and cheer. From candle-lit vineyards to historic domed hotels and a town named for the jolliest man himself, these nearby escapes promise magic for the season

Hermann, Missouri

Old-World Christmas in Wine Country

Tucked into the hills of Missouri wine country, Hermann glows with the warmth of a European Christmas market. The town’s German roots shine through in every wreath, pastry, and carol. Wander cobblestone streets strung with twinkling lights, pop into century-old wineries for mulled wine, and browse the Kristkindly Markt, where artisans sell ornaments and handmade sweets.

“With gingerbread trim, candlelit windows, and the scent of spiced cider in the air, Hermann feels like a snow globe come to life.”

Noel, Missouri

Christmas City on the River

Cradled by the Ozark bluffs, Noel (pronounced “No-el”) wears its name like a crown. Every December, the town’s tiny post office becomes the most famous in Missouri, hand-stamping thousands of cards with the beloved Noel, Missouri postmark. Main Street glimmers with garlands, carolers, and geed cheer, while families gather by the Elk River to watch the reflections of holiday lights dance on the water.

French Lick & West Baden Springs, Indiana

Gilded-Age Grandeur in Holiday Glow

Few places capture the elegance of the holidays like the twin towns of French Lick and West Baden Springs. Inside the grand French Lick Resort, guests sip cocktails beneath gilded ceilings while the lobby sparkles with garlands and a towering Christmas tree. Just beyond, the West Baden Springs Hotel stuns with its glass-domed atrium, rising six stories high and trimmed with thousands of lights. Afternoon tea beneath the dome feels like stepping into a bygone era—graceful, glowing, and entirely unforgettable.

“It’s as if Gatsby threw a Christmas party and invited Bing Crosby to sing.”

Santa Claus, Indiana

Where Christmas Lives All Year Long

In Santa Claus, every day is merry and bright, but December is pure magic. The Santa Claus Christmas Store overflows with ornaments, nutcrackers, and glittering decor, while Santa’s Candy Castle tempts with frozen hot chocolate and sweet nostalgia. Visitors mail letters from the famous Santa Claus Post Office, each sealed with the town’s special holiday postmark by a volunteer team of “Santa’s Elves.” At night, the Festival of Lights turns the entire town into a glowing wonderland worthy of its name.
