  • Romeo and Juliet

    Dance Company: Philadelphia Ballet

    Romeo and Juliet
Academy of Music 240 S Broad St., Philadelphia, PA, United States
Experience this reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s ubiquitous tale of star-crossed lovers, set to the renowned score of Sergei Prokofiev. Reimagined by Philadelphia Ballet’s Resident Choreographer Juliano Nunes, Romeo and Juliet follows the story of two young lovers from feuding families whose intense passion leads to their untimely tragic end.

Timeless Love: A Modern Playlist for Belle is inspired by the grace and emotional journey of Belle and the Beast in their iconic tale. This ballet tells a story of love that transcends appearances, where two souls, bound by circumstance, transform each other through vulnerability, courage, and compassion. The playlist captures the enchanting atmosphere of the ballet, from the tender moments of self-discovery to the Beast’s raw, emotional struggle. Each song was carefully selected to evoke the themes of beauty, love, and redemption that run through the heart of the ballet.

The songs chosen reflect the duality of Belle’s elegance and the Beast’s inner turmoil. “Beauty and the Beast” and “Tale as Old as Time” are classic representations of the timeless nature of their love story, while “Cosmic Love” by Florence + The Machine speaks to the intense, transformative power of love, much like the Beast’s journey. Belle’s character is embodied in tracks like “Turning Page” by Sleeping At Last, a tender ballad that reflects her gradual opening of the heart. In contrast, the Beast’s internal conflict is captured in “Beast of Burden” by The Rolling Stones, which mirrors his struggle for redemption and his yearning to be loved. Songs like “Fairytale” by Alexander Rybak and “Sweet Disposition” by The Temper Trap reflect Belle’s enchanted world’s magical, dreamlike quality. At the same time, “Clair de Lune” by Claude Debussy and “Turning Point” by Carlos Rafael Rivera provides a classical, ethereal beauty that mirrors the grace of the ballet’s choreography.

These carefully selected tracks weave together a sonic tapestry that tells the emotional and magical story of Beauty and the Beast in a contemporary yet timeless way.
