Dance Theatre of Harlem
Company Artist
Essential item in your dance bag?
Lip gloss. I just love the lippies.
Movie you can re-watch till the end of time?
This one’s really hard. I have two movies in mind. One is The Polar Express. I love it. I watch it every year around Christmas time. The other movie is Avatar. I think the cinematography is just genius and so beautiful to watch. I could watch both of those on repeat.
Dancer who’s inspired you?
The dancers at Dance Theatre of Harlem are just so incredibly awe-inspiring. I actually looked up to a lot of them growing up because there weren’t a lot of Black and Brown ballerinas. So to now be in the company dancing alongside the people I’ve looked up to is so full circle and incredibly fulfilling. Every day that I walk into work, I’m so inspired. The days that I get to perform, I feel on top of the world. It truly is an honor to be here in this company and doing what I love. It really is a dream come true.
Song/artist/playlist you’ve been playing on repeat?
SZA.
Least favorite dance step?
Probably hops on pointe. Just because I don’t think they are that flattering on me.
How do you like to spend your time outside of dance?
I love to spend my time on the couch doing absolutely nothing because I’m moving all day, every day, so the contrast is needed for me to decompress. But when I’m not doing that, I’m outside. I love seeing what’s around. Harlem is a place filled with life and culture so I love trying new foods. I love thrifting and shopping. New York—there’s just so much to do and that’s what I love about it.
Go-to coffee shop order?
I am an avid coffee drinker. I loved an iced caramel macchiato or an iced latte. If I don’t have my coffee in the morning, I am not the same person.
Essential post-show ritual?
My essential post-show ritual includes getting home and immediately dropping my stuff on the floor. I’ll clean it up later, I promise. I just need to wipe off my make-up and do a good scrubba-dub-dub in the shower. After that I will go to the couch, order food, or eat what I have in the fridge. I’ll usually call family and update them on my day. Maybe I’ll do something nice for myself and light a candle or watch a show and then I get a good night’s rest. Â
